LAMBING AND BREEDING
•
The Pedigree Welsh Mountain Ewe is economical, milky and hardy. They are excellent
mothers who are protective of their young, and require little to no help during lambing.
•
The Pedigree Welsh Mountain Sheep tends to be more prolific than other Welsh breeds and
will regularly achieve a scanning percentage of 200% although anything between 160% -
180% is more common.
•
Most of the flocks will lamb from the beginning of March until the end of April although
some flocks lamb earlier to match their farming system.
•
The lambs are born with a good covering of wool to enable them to survive in harsh
weather.
•
The lambs tend to be lively at birth and are determined to get up and suckle within the first
few minutes of their life, and thrive on only their mother's milk.
•
The ewes are very milky and when crossed with a commercial ram she can easily raise twins
to double her weight.
•
The lambs can reach a weight of 35-40kg by the end of Summer on nothing but grass.
•
Pedigree Welsh Mountain Sheep produce high quality, excellent tasting meat which is
usually left to grow and finish naturally.
•
If cross breeding, the ewe lambs are ideal to be kept back as replacement ewes for use in a commercial system as they inherit the maternal
characteristics.
